At BlueFit Swimming, this reinforces our mission to equip families to navigate the water safely. Because safety extends beyond the pool, having a basic understanding of CPR and first aid can make all the difference.

But the reality is that accidents and medical emergencies happen everywhere.

Luca, Swim Teacher, Lifeguard, and Nippers Instructor at Lane Cove, knows firsthand why mastering basic first aid and CPR is essential for everyday life. Put to the test at a social gathering late last year, Luca used his training to quickly assess a scene, ensure safety, and treat a guest's severe ankle injury within the first five minutes. The injured individual later praised his fast response and calm guidance before receiving further medical care, highlighting a core belief for Luca: "You never know when you might need it—whether on duty or out with friends."

The biggest barrier in any crisis is hesitation. Building awareness around core survival skills provides our staff, members, and the local community with the crucial confidence to look out for one another in any situation.

"By integrating life-saving training and everyday risk awareness into our workplace and club culture, we ensure that every individual is empowered to step up when it matters most," Luca explains. "Ultimately, creating a safer environment isn't just about policies—it's about equipping our people with practical skills that protect lives both on the gym floor and out in the wider community."

Equipping our Lane Cove community with these practical skills ensures more people are prepared to act when it matters most.

Here is a quick-reference guide to essential life-saving skills:

Here are quick ways to handle common occurrences:

Minor Bleeding: Apply direct, firm pressure to the wound using a clean cloth or bandage.

Twisted Joints & Broken Bones: Follow RICER (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Referral).

Handy Trick: If you suspect a break or severe sprain, gently tie a rolled-up towel or spare clothing around the limb as a makeshift sling or splint to keep it stable.

Minor Burns: Run the burn under cool, running water for a full 20 minutes. Never use ice, as it restricts blood flow and can cause further tissue damage.

Nosebleeds: Lean forward (not backward) and pinch the soft part of the nose for 10 to 15 minutes. If bleeding continues for more than 15 minutes, seek medical attention.

Choking: Deliver firm back blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand to dislodge the blockage.

Empowering yourself with CPR and First Aid qualifications brings incredible peace of mind.
